Vote for Media Features


Here at WordPress.com, we always run the most recent version of the WordPress open source software. In addition, we do custom development so that we can offer features not included in the open source core product (like VideoPress, built-in polls, etc.). Because WordPress.com gets new features implemented as they are developed, we don’t usually talk too much about big version releases. For example, WordPress 2.8 was released recently, but we didn’t announce it here because WordPress.com blogs had already been running the new features (like the new widgets administration panel) before the big open source release occurred.

The open source project is getting started on development of version 2.9, which is expected to launch toward the end of this year. The reason I think it’s worth posting about this here on WordPress.com is that the focus of the 2.9 development is going to be improved media features, and improved media management is one of the most frequently requested things in the support forums, support emails, comments and at WordCamps.

There have been many suggestions for how to improve our media functions, so many that we can’t build all of them at once. For the next couple of days, there is a survey you can take to vote on which media features are the most important to you. This will help us prioritize the development. Are you dying for photo albums? A redesigned uploader? The ability to crop, resize or rotate your images? There are 11 proposed media features listed in the survey for you to rank in order of priority.

Descriptions of each proposed feature are provided at the beginning of the voting survey, so you’ll be sure to know what each what means. Only the first question (pick your top choice) is mandatory. This survey isn’t very long. Question two lets you assign a general high/low priority to each of the 11 feature suggestions, while question 3 asks you to rank the 11 features in order of priority from 1-11. A text box or two allow you to make additional suggestions, and that’s it. The survey is anonymous, and will be open until Friday, July 10, 2009 at 11:59 PM UTC.

Six Archetypes of Youth Change Makers

Since the founding of TakingITGlobal in 1999, I have been incredibly inspired by my interactions with thousands of young change makers from all around the world. Through my Masters Research on youth-led action in an international context along with exposure to other studies and international conferences examining the role of today's generation of youth as change agents, I have gained an important observation. My observation is that I have seen the emergence of Six Archetypes of Youth Change Makers, which provide a glance at the roles young people are taking on in the process of creating change.


The Dreamer

The Dreamer is the driver behind new ideas. Dreamers are often the first to articulate a long-term vision for the future and think big. It is the sense of aspiration, optimism and imagination of dreamers that drive progress, innovation and change.

The Megaphone

The Megaphone is a vocal advocate for change. Megaphones are very focused on delivering the message and will campaign tirelessly and work hard to lobby for a message to be heard. They inspire action through their words and help to shift priorities on the agenda.

The Spark Plug

The Spark Plug is a catalyst and has a gift for networking and connecting people. The Spark Plug is able to foster collaborations and bring many different organizations and individuals together in dialogue, convincing diverse interest groups to come together for a common goal.

The Task Master

The Task Master is often behind the scenes making things happen and is sometimes the under-rated player within a group or organization. Often, it is the Task Master who literally keeps things together by turning ideas into manageable tasks with actionable timelines. Task Masters are practical, objective-oriented individuals.

The Sherpa

The Sherpa serves as a guide who provides mentorship, insight and training through peer education. Sherpas are natural educators with a strong interest in learning and sharing knowledge. Sherpas value hands on experiences and are able to draw upon the expertise and resources of those they encounter.

The Storyteller

The Storyteller is often the documenter of an organization and its projects, preparing short stories, interviews, blogs, webcasts newsletters and more. Storytellers become a vehicle for spreading inspiration and sharing of best practices through identifying patterns and strengthening movements through recognizing exceptional individuals.

National Blog Posting Month


Remember National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) back in November? You all used the opportunity to take a swing at churning out a 50,000-word novel on your blogs in only one month — some with great success!

There’s also NaBloPoMo, which has nothing to do with post-modernism, but with blogging! It stands for National Blog Posting Month.

It’s an even more fitting occasion for posting regularly to your blog on the topics that interest you. And maybe the best part is that it starts whenever you want it to! The only objective is to post every day for a month. So why not begin with July? To make it official, sign up here. It’s open to anyone with a blog, anywhere in the world.

The NaBloPoMo team provides a theme for each month, which isn’t mandatory, but is a nice way to gain inspiration that can kick off your daily updates.

Not into that? Then we suggest sticking to the stuff you’ve been blogging about all along — the things you experience and love — with the added caveat of keeping it on the regular.

If you run out of steam, you can always find ways to blog about the dozens of weird celebrations and holidays that take place in July, in addition to Independence Day in the U.S. — like Ice Cream Soda Day, Video Games Day, or Bugs Bunny’s Birthday.

To plug the WordPress community into your endeavor, we suggest using NaBloPoMo09 as a tag on each post you publish to your blog. They’ll show up on the tag results page, which is also a great place to get inspired by your fellow bloggers.

O ekstremno hitrih avtomobilih, svetlobno prepustnem betonu in Evropi 2049

Vizionarji, kot je na primer oblikovalska legenda Luigi Colani 29.Junija na Incredible Summit na Dunaju.

Inovativni in ustvarjalni začetniki, odločevalci, podjetniki in zainteresirani posamezniki iz celega konca Evrope, se bodo srečali na dogodku, ki sliši na ime Incredible Summit : IncrediblEurope- “Moč kreativnosti in inovacij” (www.incredibleurope.com) 29. Junija na Dunaju.

Vodilni  inovatorji in ustvarjalci
“Trenutne ekonomske razmere zahtevajo našo pripravljenost za spremembe, medtem ko ob istem času, globalna konkurenca zahteva jasno pozicijo evropskega kontinenta”, razlaga Summit-ova pobudnica Selma Prodanovič iz Brainswork-a o motivu za iniciativo IncrediblEurope.
Med vodilnimi, ki so že potrdili udeležbo, se nahajajo ambasadorji EU year of innovation and creativity,  Aron Losonczi, ustanoviteljica IECD poslovne šole na Bledu, profesorica Danica Purg, nagrajeni oblikovalec Mirko Ilič, mladi globalni voditelj svetovno ekonomskega foruma 2008/2009 Suhas Gopinath, svetovno priznan violinist in kulturni ambassador Miha Pogačnik ter oblikovalska legenda Luigi Colani.

Cilj tega interdisciplinarnega vrha je navdušiti anticiklična dejanja, možnost učenja različnosti in vizijo Evrope 2049.

Brigitte Jank, predsednica Dunajske gospodarske in industrijske zbornice podpira idejo: “Zame ne gre za čisto komercializacijo kreativnega proizvoda, ampak je cilj pripeljati kreativnost in podjetništvo skupaj kot enakovredna partnerja in podpirati interdisciplinarni diskurz.
Razprave na visoki ravni, presenetljive predstavitve dosedanjih izkušenj, interaktivne delavnice, kot so generiranje idej ali oblikovanje prihodnosti Evrope na paru Edelwiser-jevih smuči, ter sodelovanje “petih imen za pomnenje” so bodoči koraki proti evropski prihajajoči vlogi kot trajnega, kreativnega in inovativnega kontinenta- vloga da gradimo skupaj.

Luigi Colani

Profesor Colani, pionir organskega oblikovanja, ki se vidi kot upravičeni naslednik Galilea Galileia , je poslednjih 50 let zasnoval neverjetne oblike za avtomobile, letala, arhitekturo, več kot tisoč delov pohištva in posameznih produktov, pa vse do nešteto tehničnih inovacij in svetovnih uspehov. Njegove posamezne, in posebne zasnove predstavljajo mejnike v zgodovini dizajna.
Colani je razvil več kot 20.000 oblik za časa njegove kariere. Približno 70% od teh so vsakdanji produkti , kot npr. kemični svinčnik in jajčni podstavek, ki so  bili proizvedeni v večih serijah. Njegov bolj nenavaden design kot npr. “stratosferska jadrnica in 900 PS “super sportcar” so bili veliko bolj redka realnost. In celo danes, pri 80ih letih, Colani predstavlja svojo pozicijo na poseben način: energični oblikovalec še vedno zabava občinstvo vse do zadnjega sedeža. Je gostobeseden, izjemno kreativen, kontaverzen, provokativen in živahen.

Pobudnik in gostitelj Brainswork

Podjetje Brainswork je bilo ustanovljeno leta 2005 na Dunaju, in leto kasneje v ZDA, pod taktiko “mrežne in marketinške” strokovnjakinje Selme Prodanovič, in se od takrat razvilo v eno najuspešnejših razvojnih in omrežnih podjetij v regiji. May Wrap-Up


Sorry for this being the latest wrap-up ever.

May was a fun month for us. We rolled out a ton of new features: the ability to add YouTube videos and polls to comments, stats in your time zone, the VideoPress upgrade (with HD!), post by email, new stats charts, comment search, improved comment reply by email, and VideoPress.com.

May was also the month for our largest-ever WordCamp San Francisco. Mission Bay Conference Center was a packed house, but (amazingly) everything ran on schedule, and nothing went wrong! A round of applause is due to our sponsors, speakers, and everyone who attended for helping to make WordCamp such a smooth success. Thanks for making it all possible.

Yahoo! App and 360 Importer


We’ve got two Yahoo! related news items today.

The first is that we’ve launched a Yahoo! 360 importer (listed in your admin screens under Tools → Import) to make migration from 360 to WordPress.com super easy. Just upload the Yahoo! 360 export ZIP file, and we’ll do the rest. Yahoo! will be shutting down their 360 service soon, so if you have any friends over there feel free to give them a little help and encouragement to head over to WordPress.com :)

Second is the release of our WordPress.com QuickPress Yahoo! Application. You can post posts and read and moderate your most recent comments straight from My Yahoo!. (Note to any self-hosted WordPress.org folks out there: the app currently only works on WordPress.com. We’re working on making it .com/.org universal.)

Thanks to Yahoo! for their help with their Yahoo! Application Platform, and thanks to all of you for the best blogs on the intertubes.

Priznanje za blog, ki spodbuja neformalno učenje

Prijetno presenečenje. Priznanje s podpisom dveh ministrov. Ne zgodi se pogosto. NIsem se prijavljal, nisem bil na podelitvi, zato še bolj iskreno.

Prihodnost medijev

Razvnamemo razum, spodbudimo čustva, razigramo čute.

Kam nas pelje prihodnost – v reševanje medijev ali novinarstva? Kdo je kralj v tej zgodbi – vsebina, skupnost uporabnikov (bralcev) ali lastniki kapitala? Kako se bodo obstoječi lastniki „klasičnih” medijev poskušali ponovno „izumiti” in kako jih bodo alternativni poslovni modeli želeli spraviti s prestola? Kaj se dogaja med oglaševalci? Katere oblike so najpogostejše in uspešnejše v digitalnem oglaševanju? Kakšna je prihodnost družabnih omrežij, blogerskih platform, mikrobloganja…

Kateri so ključni elementi novih poslovnih modelov? Kdo izgublja in kdo zmaguje v vmesnem obdobju? Navedene so le nekatere dileme in vprašanja s katerimi se bomo ukvarjali z namenom osvetliti prihodnosti medijev in njihovega vpliva na nas. Pravzaprav obratno – našega vpliva na njih!

Na omenjene in mnoge druge teme bomo poskušali odgovoriti na srečanju Poslovnega kluba Socius.

Odprto pismo prijatelja Unicefa, Starša otrok sveta in kandidata za izvršilni odbor

REVNI OTROCI VAS PROSIJO ZA RAZUM!

Spoštovani!

Iskreno hudo mi je, ko zadnje dni opazujem dogajanje v zvezi z Unicefom Slovenija.

Poznam namreč rudarja Jusufa. Srečal sem ga v Burkini Faso, kamor sem se na svoje stroške, kot predstavnik nekaterih organizacij, odpravil skupaj z delegacijo Unicefa. Tudi njegove mlajše prijatelje sem videl v rudnikih, ko so plezali iz temnih globokih rovov. Pa seveda tiste otroke v sirotišnici, ki so bili tako iskreno veseli bonbonov. In tudi tistih dojenčkov, enega izmed njih, leto dni je bil star, ki sem ga držal v naročju in ne vem, če je danes sploh še živi, saj je bil podhranjen in okužen z virusom HIV.

Tem otrokom pomaga UNICEF Slovenije! Takih kot je Jusuf je bilo lansko leto 1000.

Spomnimo se Konfucija. Nekoč je rekel: Ljudje se ne spotikajo ob gore, temveč ob krtine.
Razmere v Unicefu Slovenija so mi poznane. Niso popolne, kar se tiče odnosov. Vendar gotovo niso zrele za medijsko pranje umazanega perila. Vsaka, še tako imenitna družina, ima svoje probleme. Družinske urice za skupno mizo so pravi naslov, kako se loteva takih težav.

Revni otroci vas prosijo za razum, saj so dejstva jasna!

Žal mi je, da je znotraj Unicefa nastalo nekaj polov, ki so k celotni stvari pritegnili še medije.
Zakaj žal? Sem zagovornik transparentnosti, strinjam se z demokracijo, javnost mora biti obveščena. Vendar morajo prav humanitarne organizacije izjemno paziti, kdaj informacije zakrožijo v javnost. In predvsem na kakšen način. Povsem podpiram, da se o nepravilnostih obvešča javnost, vendar če gre za pranje umazanega perila različnih osebnih interesov, je to izjemno nevarno, če ne celo neodgovorno. Javnost velikokrat ne prebira medijev natančno, velikokrat meče vse v isti koš. Saj vsi kradejo, se bo spet slišalo. Mora pa nam biti jasno, da so stvari v Unicefu Slovenije denarno transparentne in jasne, ve se, kam je šel denar donatorjev in to potrjujejo revizije in mednarodna pisarna.

Trpijo otroci, spoštovani, saj zbijate ugled organizaciji!

Najpreprostejše in najkrajše moralno načelo je: drugi naj ti strežejo kar najmanj, ti pa drugim kar največ pravi Lev Tolstoj. Kako imenitno je njegovo načelo, ki naj bi veljalo povsod, predvsem pa v humanitarno razvojnem sektorju. Unicef je v zadnjem času naredil veliko. O tem sem velikokrat pisal, med drugim je bil ravno članek ˝Unicefova inovativnost rešuje življenja˝ nagrajen kot najboljši članek o inovativnosti v študentski kategoriji.

Čas je za akcijo zavihanih rokavov, v dobrobit otrok, ne lastnih interesov!

Pozabljamo, kar je poudaril pred kratkim predsednik države. Finančna kriza na severu lahko vodi do katastrofalne humanitarne krize na jugu. Kako prav je imel Mali princ. Če hočeš videti, moraš gledati s  srcem. Bistvo je očem nevidno. Prepričan sem, da je čas, da stopimo skupaj, za dobrobit otrok. Zato sem se odločil, da kandidiram za upravni odbor. V to me je prepričalo nekaj tujih predstavnikov UNICEFa, predvsem pa občutek ponosa, ko sem v Burkina Fasu stal v šoli, ki je bila zgrajena z denarjem slovenskih darovalcev na njej pa je bila tabla UNICEF SLOVENIJA. Zase vem, da bom delal v dobrobit organizacije in se držal osnovnega poslanstva – reševanja otrok. Opozarjal bom na napake, vendar bom, te manjše, ki se pojavljajo vsak dan, skušal reševati za zaprtimi stenami. Najlažje je sicer zamahniti z rokami. A vedno se ob taki misli spomnim na zgodbo o morskih zvezdah.

Starec se je sprehajal po plaži. V daljavi je zagledal deklico, ki je nekaj pobirala po pesku. Ko se ji je približal, je ugotovil, da pobira morske zvezde in jih meče nazaj v morje.
»Kaj počneš? Zakaj zapravljaš čas?« se čudi starec.
»Če zvezda ostane na obali, bo poginila na soncu.«
odgovori deklica.
»Na tej plaži leži na tisoče morskih zvezd, saj je obala dolga nekaj kilometrov. Kakšen smisel ima torej rešiti teh nekaj zvezd!«
Deklica pobere zvezdo, jo vrže v morje in odvrne: »Zanjo ga  ima!«

Tudi za Jusufa ga je imelo. In tisoč njegovih sovrstnikov. In prepričan sem, da ga bo imelo še za številne otroke, ki jim UNICEF Slovenija pomaga vsako leto. Zato naj prevlada razum in ne osebni interesi. To vas s svojimi iskrenimi pogledi prosijo revni otroci.

Prijaznost po ameriško

Zgodba gre takole.

Peljemo se iz Monteraya. Pozno zvečer. Gneča. Na avtocesti zaprejo en pas, to pomeni 8 milj 2 uri. Zmanjkuje bencina. Zmanjkuje tudi nas. Ko se zbudim, ugotovim, da spimo vsi, tudi šofer. Še dobro, da smo stali v vrsti. Prvi možen izhod ven, do črpalke. Ob dveh ponoči. Vse zaprto, še dobro, da imajo v ZDA kartice. Natočimo in zapeljemo na izhod. Tu nam izhod blokira črn avto. Odpre se okno. Želijo da ga odpremo tudi mi.

Prva dilema… A ga odpremo?

Zmaga pogum. Mlad moški prosi, da mu pomagamo. Zmanjkalo mu je bencina, ima le denar, ne kartice. Zraven vidimo, da leži nekdo. Pokrit.

Kaj sedaj?

Premislek. Stopiva iz avta voznik in sovoznik. Da bova vsaj dva. Stopi ven on in v tistem, se dvigne sopotnik….

Je po nama?

Ne.Zraven je spala punca. Res sta se vračala iz plaže, pristala v gneči kot mi in ostala brez bencina. Spet se je pokazalo, da se prijaznost splača. Čez dve minuti pride še nekdo. Enak problem.

Ob dveh ponoči smo se počutili tako, kot da je naša misija na tem svetu reševati Američane (brez kartic) na črpalki v Los Gatosu. Vendar je vedno lepo pomagati. Čeprav vzbuja to strah in bi kdo rekel, da smo neumni, da smo se sploh spustili v to.

Kaj če bi imel pištolo. Kaj… Nič… Tokrat tako, morda drugič drugač. Ampak če bi se to zgodilo meni, bi tako pomoč cenil celo življenje. Še vedno sem na strani prjaznosti.
